St. Michael's Reaching Out to our Community

2007 Annual Report

The Mercy and Social Justice Ministry was formed April 30, 2007.  It replaces the former Outreach programs and expands our focus.  The mission of this ministry is “to represent God’s love and compassion through acts of mercy and justice.  This mission is carried out through:  assistance in providing life’s necessities to those in need, support of the education of young people, participation in carrying out the Millennium Development Goals (United Nations), and education of our members concerning the needs of both the local community and the world.  The ministry supports individual and group ministries at St. Michael’s.

Activities in 2007 included support of the Carnival, and sending proceeds to Solar Cookers International and St. Matthews Food Closet.  The ministry hosted two coffee hours and promoted the concept of fair trade, and Episcopal Relief and Development (ERD).  Several articles in the Messenger featured St. Michael’s member activities in our community.  Sales of Bishop’s Blend coffee (organic, free traded, and benefits ERD) were held.  The ministry selected local and international agencies to receive budgeted monies from St. Michael’s in support of our mission.  Finally, we raised $1350 and purchased “Mike” the ox, some farm tools and seeds, a whole flock of chickens, a goat, a pig, and a share in a fish farm.

All who have an interest are invited to join us.  Look for meeting notices in the Sunday Bulletin.  We want to support you as you “go into the world in peace to love and serve.”

Empty Bowls - A River City Community Services Charity

The fifth Empty Bowls luncheon event – to be held Tuesday, March 11th, 2008, 11 a.m. – 2 p.m., at the Masonic Temple, 1123 J Street – will help raise funds at a critical time for increasing numbers of hungry adults and children in the Sacramento area.  During the last three months of 2007, requests for food assistance received by River City Community Services increased 40 percent over the prior year while the agency’s food expenses increased 35 percent during the same period.  The event provides a vital source of funds for River City Community Services, a 501(c)(3) charity that provides food and emergency housing aid to anyone in need in Sacramento County.

Tickets may be purchased for $25 each through the agency’s website at http://www.rivercitycommunityservices.org, or at the following Sacramento retail locations:

  • Tulip Paperie, 2600 Fair Oaks Boulevard, Suite 109, 481-4159
  • Prudential California Realty, 1819 K Street, Suite 100, 491-1516
  • Trinity Cathedral Bookshop, 2620 Capitol Avenue, 446-2513
  • Avid Reader at the Tower, 1600 Broadway, 441-4400

The $25 donation includes a soup luncheon prepared by area restaurants, and handmade bowl made by students and artists from throughout the region.

Cash donations may be made online at www.rivercitycommunityservices.org, or sent by mail to P. O. Box 160204, Sacramento, CA 95816.

For further information, contact Eileen Thomas via telephone at 916-446-2627, x3001, or via email at rccsca@sbcglobal.net.

A Fundraiser to Fight Hunger

Serving the Hungry

Can’t attend Empty Bowls? River City Community Services always needs caring people to continue their work. They offer four ways to participate year-round:

Become a friend of River City Community Services:

Your annual personal contribution of $250.00 welcomes you into “Our Circle of Friends.” RCCS friends receive quarterly reports of our progress and invitations to special events.

Encourage your employer to become a corporate sponsor:

Corporate sponsors have contributed one third of the RCCS annual budget and are invited to serve on the volunteer board of directors.

Become a volunteer:

More than 30 community volunteers donate 10,000 hours annually to our organization. Volunteers can help with direct food outreach or assist with program administration or fundraising.

Sponsor a food drive at your place of work or service organization:

Targeted food drives that collect the 13 core items for balanced nutrition reduce the cost of purchasing food.

To become a volunteer or donate today, contact Eileen Thomas, Executive Director, at rccsca@sbcglobal.net or at 446-2627.

Baked Potato Supper

The church sends many thanks to the EYC and Junior Youth Group for all their hard work to present another delicious Baked Potato Supper. The youth did a wonderful job.

African Team Ministries Thank You

The annual sale of hand crafted jewelry and other items from African Team Ministries raised $1,300 in 2007. Those funds go to aid education and health care in the churches of East Africa.

Charitable Reminder
Many work places are involved in United Way or other campaigns that enable employees to give directly to their charity of choice. If your work place gives this opportunity, please know that River City Community Services’ 501(c)3 EIN number is 91- 1851398. Giving through your place of employment is a convenient way to donate and make a difference in the lives of people in your community.

Why get involved with community outreach?

Scripture commends it:

Throughout His ministry, Jesus spoke of serving others, especially those that are less fortunate than us. He set the ultimate example by seeking out the company of lepers, tax collectors and Samaritans.

It reflects our core values:

St. Michael’s strives to please God by:

  • Affirming our cohesive spiritual community as we honor diversity
  • Reaching out to and welcoming all individuals and families
  • Serving each other and the community around us with passion.
Our Baptism calls us to reach out:

“Will you seek and serve Christ in all persons, loving your neighbor as yourself? Will you strive for justice and peace among all people, and respect the dignityof every human being?
