Sunday School for Pre-K - 3rd Grade

Godly Play: Preschool through Kindergarten
Sunday mornings during the 10 am worship service.  Children are led to the Godly Play Classroom in the Chapel by their teacher following the music program.  They are brought into the church just before Communion.

  • April 6 –     Work Session
  • April 13 –   Lesson: The Exile & Return
  • April 20 –   Lesson: The Prophets
  • April 27 –  Children’s Homily in Church
What is Godly Play?  It is primarily sacred worship for young children using trained adults to convey the Christian tradition through presentations of parables, sacred stories, liturgy and silence.  Godly Play draws on the traditions of ancient storytelling and simple hands-on materials.

Living the Good News : Grades One through Three
Sunday mornings during the 10 am worship service.  Classes take place in the Halls and children are led by their teacher following the music program.  They are brought into the church just before Communion.

  • April 6 –     Lesson: The Stranger (Luke 24:13-35)
  • April 13 –   Lesson: Welcome (John 10:1-10)
  • April 20 –   Lesson: A Wonderful Place (John 14:1-14)
  • April 27 –  Children’s Homily in Church

We are introducing a new curriculum for our primary age children beginning this month.  Children in grades 1-3 want answers to everything. Living the Good News helps leaders guide children in questioning and exploring Bible stories, church holidays, and Christian themes through games, group play, crafts, songs and prayer.  This faith curriculum is tied to the Sunday lectionary.  Children will hear and engage the same scripture readings as their parents.

2007 Annual Report for Godly Play

The new Sunday School Program, Godly Play, for four and five year olds began in September 2007 and is doing remarkable well.  The program consists of the telling of parables, sacred and liturgical stories by using various tools (wooden figures and other wooden objects).  Godly Play is based on the Montessori concept that allows children to develop active listening skills to use story telling and play to create existential meaning.  But the program would not have been successful if it were not for the following people who volunteered to participate as storytellers or door persons.

A big thank you to: Beckie Oleson, Mary Hauck, Paul Hauck, Joanie Cahill, Pat Winkle, Kathy Hanson, Cynthia Metcalf, Sally Jervis, Dave Decker, Edie Decker, Carla Vento and Mary Groesbeck.  A special thanks to Pastor Mary who brought this program to St. Michael’s and whose guidance and help made it all possible.

2007 Annual Report for Sunday School

The children's programs expanded this fall with the addition of Godly Play for children age four through kindergarten.  We especially thank Diane Hegland for organizing this new venture, John Stellman for making the storage and display shelves for the chapel, and all the storytellers and doorkeepers.  Journey 2 Adulthood, a program for seventh- through twelfth- graders, also was added, ably led by Darcy and Josh Larkey.   First- through third-graders continue to learn Bible stories and about our church through art, drama, kitchen, music, video, and storytelling activities and the Junior Youth Group (grades four through six) continues their Bible study.  We thank the many volunteer leaders and parent helpers who make these programs thrive.

Children from all four groups plus the nursery combine for the annual Christmas Pageant, children's Stations of the Cross, and Easter egg hunt.  They also lector, usher, and sing during “Children in Church” Sunday on the 4th Sunday of each month.

We give special thanks for Pastor Mary, who creates the children's page for the Messenger each month, and for all of the parents and grandparents who bring their children.
