Junior Youth Group (JYG)

Sunday mornings during the 10 am worship service, JYG meets in the Friendship Center.  The young people gather with their teachers following the music program.  They join their families in church just before Communion.

Grades Four through Six
The Junior Youth Group was designed with the needs of ‘tweens’ in mind.  Capable and inquisitive, young people in this age group are ready for Bible study, outreach and service opportunities, social activities in a Christian context, and leadership roles in the worship service.  JYG meets weekly to foster growth in these areas.  Students from the JYG serve as readers, ushers, acolytes, & greeters on Youth Service Sundays.  They plan a quarterly social or service activity outside of their Sunday morning meetings.

2007 Annual Report

Our Junior Youth group has grown a bit. We have 19 children enrolled and on average about 8 children attending on any given week.  This year we have some new parish members that are actively participating in our weekly Junior Youth Group meetings and we hope to see continued growth in this area.  Again in 2007, our JYG is comprised of fourth through sixth graders.

On the first Sunday of each month, Sue Davis, Pam Busby and Paul Hauck meet with the JYG members and plan for either a community service activity or a fellowship team building such as bowling, ice skating and pizza or ice cream parties, community walks, this year we even tried Christmas Caroling at a local Assisted Living facility.  The caroling was much fun.  Chris Mackey and Father George led the children with Guitar and Banjo accompaniment.  The kids also helped to serve and clean up at the annual parish potato supper.

Pam Busby and Chuck Schaller teach Bible lessons and engage the children in robust discussions on the second and third Sundays.  As a group the JYG leverage the Adventure Bible to use a reference guide to help the children look for answers to their questions.   The children are at a great age, in fourth through sixth grade, they are beginning to be more independent and are full of questions and opinions.  This is a time where the influences of peers begin to make impressions on our youth.  Their commitment to their Christian education helps to reinforce good choices and the consequences of bad choices.  The Bible has so many great stories that can illustrate both.

On the fourth Sunday we celebrate Youth Service Sunday.  During the 10:00 service our JYG act as greeters, ushers and readers.  Gaining knowledge of the roles the adults of the church perform each week.  The JYG along with the J2A also work closely with Paul Hauck performing "Chancel Dramas" teaching and reinforcing lessons from the Gospel or Sermon.  Both the children and the members of the parish benefit by their interpretations of these stories.
