Altar Guild

2007 Annual Report

Work behind the scenes in a quiet ministry.  St. Michael’s Altar Guild prepares the sanctuary for all services. This includes all 3 Sunday services, Weddings, Baptisms, funerals/ memorials, Commitments, as, St. Michael’s Day School Eucharists, well as special services during Advent, Christmas, Ash Wednesday, Lent, Holy Week and Easter.    Members of the Altar Guild are divided into four weekly crews.  Each crew works one of the fifth Sundays that occur during the year.  Each member is asked to volunteer from 9-10:30 on the Saturday of their week, and to attend one of the 3 Sunday services that weekend.  Additionally, the guild has 2-3 meetings during the year to review changes, plan or decorate for the major church Holiday service occurring.  Members are able to trade weekends with other guild members to accommodate their travel, or other plans, and some will occasionally do their preparation duties on Friday. Following a well tested checklist, members prepare for the services, duties include, polishing Silver and brass, dusting and cleaning, set up for the service and clean up after the services.  Fresh flowers are arranged each week by a guild member. At least one Altar Guild member is present at every service, so rarely does a member work alone.   Altar Guild receives a small budget from pledges to cover the cost of wine, wafers and oil for the candles.  All other expenses including the weekly flowers and Special flowers for Holy Days come from Flower memorials and donations.

We wish to thank our present Altar Guild Members: Jackie Linn, Mary Davy, Hazel Morse, Marijane Jacobs, Marilyn Poindexter, Dancy Dobrenick, Mary Hutchinson, Sally Jervis, Sue Corbin, Pat Gilbert, Pat Williams, Marge Fennessy, Janice Bowdler, Nelda Finney, Mary Ellen Ferguson, Linda Davis and Sally Freitag our faithful correspondent for Thank yous.  Pat Gilbert also helps to shorten the Altar Guild “to do List” by laundering all linens used during the services and Pat Cole helps with special flowers and decorating along with the other members for Holy Days.

We would like to say “Thank” to four retiring members Marjorie Akers, Kathy Walker, Selma Wolfson, and Diane Craig.  They will be missed.  We also mourned the Death of 40 year Altar Guild member Eve Smith.

Serving on the altar guild is a wonderful way to meet members who attend other services and to participate in the “behind the scenes” worship preparation.  We are always looking for new members to join us in this special ministry.  For more information you may call Sharon Turner, 723-4770; or Dancy Dobrenick 359-3344.

Altar Guild Is Recruiting!

If you are looking for a ministry at St. Michael’s, but are unable to commit large amounts of time, please consider Altar Guild. The time involved is about 1 1/2 hours on Saturday and the same on Sunday (including the service), once a month. Our duties include cleaning and preparing the church for Sunday worship. Please call Sharon Turner, 723-4770, or Dancy Dobrenick 359-3344, for more information.

St. Michael’s Altar Guild prepares for all services at St. Michael’s. These include regular Sunday and Wednesday services, weddings, baptisms, funeral/memorial services, as well as the extra services at Christmas, Ash Wednesday, Holy Week, and Easter.

Members of the Altar Guild are divided into four weekly crews. When there is a fifth weekend in the month, these extra Sundays are shared by the four crews.

Altar Guild members are asked to set aside 2 hours on Saturday morning and attend one of the Sunday services on the weekend to which they are assigned.

On Saturday, preparations are made for the coming week, including cleaning, polishing, and laundering as needed. The Altar flowers are picked up by the Guild and arranged for the Sunday services.

Each team is responsible for services during the week, always Wednesday at 10AM, and any other special service that may take place.

At least one member of the Altar Guild is present at every service.

Altar Guild income comes from Flower Memorials and other donations.

This is a most rewarding ministry and new members are always welcome. “On the Job” training is available.

For more information please call Sharon Turner 916-723-4770 and Dancy Dobrenick 916-359-3344.
