St. Michael's Choir
The St. Michael's Choir is a fun group that provides an important function for our services on Sundays. We also provide entertainment for the community through special performances.
Regular duties included weekly two-hour rehearsals on Thursday nights and rehearsals at 9:15 AM on Sundays.
2007 Annual Report
Music & Performing Arts
During 2007, the Music Department engaged in the following activities.
- Regular duties included weekly two-hour rehearsals on Thursday nights, rehearsals at 9:15 AM on Sundays, and singing every Sunday from September through the first two Sundays of June for the 10:00 AM service.
- During Holy Week, the choir sang for both the 8' and 10' AM Palm Sunday services, the Maundy Thursday service, the Vigil, and both the 8' and 10' AM Easter Sunday services. Additionally, Don Hall and I provided music for the 7' PM Good Friday service.
- Many thanks to Warner Seargeant for securing the brass quartet for Easter morning services. Their beautiful playing enhanced the services greatly.
- The choir presented a choral evensong service Sunday, April 29.
- The choir hosted the Yuba-Sutter Chorale for a concert Tuesday, May 1st.
- Sunday, June 10th, was the choir's last Sunday to sing before the summer recess.
- The men of the choir sang Sunday, July 1st, for the July 4th celebration Sunday.
- The choir reconvened and sang for the July 29th confirmation service with Bishop Beisner present.
- August 18th and August 25th, St. Michael's Performing Arts presented two performances of "Got Music? A Musical Revue". The cast and crew were made up of choir members, SMAG members, and friends from the community. The August 18th performance included a wine and hors d'oeuvres reception hosted by Virginia Henry, Peter Luchini, and Brian Luchini, and the August 25th performance included an ice cream social hosted by Mark and Jane Van Brussel and Mark and Esta Wiederanders. Both performances were very well attended and well received. My heartfelt thanks to everyone for their contributions of time, talent, energy, and underwriting for this wonderful production! All who participated, either on stage, back stage, or in the audience received a special gift of an uplifting musical experience. Special thanks to my daughter, Amy, for all her help with choreography and staging.
- The choir resumed its regular Thursday night rehearsal schedule September 6th and began its regular fall schedule Sunday, September 9th.
- The choir sang for Roberta Fisher's memorial service October 6th.
- Don Hall presented an organ recital Saturday, October 20th. Many thanks to Don for his dedicated service to St. Michael's.
- The choir went to Westminster Woods for a retreat November 2, 3, and 4.
- The choir presented a service of Christmas lessons and carols Sunday, December 16th. Special thanks to the choir for their commitment to a heavy rehearsal schedule to prepare this music.
- The choir held their annual Christmas potluck and gift exchange Wednesday, December 19th, at the home of Art and Terry Maxwell. Special thanks to the Maxwell’s for their gracious hospitality.
- Christmas Eve, the choir sang for the 5' PM and 10' PM Christmas Eve services and the 9:30 PM Festival of Christmas Music. Don Hall and I provided music for the 10' AM Christmas Day service.
- In transition, the choir said farewell to member Jim Mynard who died of complications from melanoma Friday, December 21st. In addition to singing in the bass section, Jim helped with the music library. We shall miss Jim's presence in our ensemble.
- Once again, I cannot stress enough my gratitude to Kay and Hugh Griffin, and to Edie Decker and Jim Mynard for the marvelous job they do year-round in maintaining our choir library. It is an ongoing, tedious, and sometimes very frustrating task, and each of these individuals brings not only his/her organizational skills, but dedication, hard work, and sense of humor to this job. The music library represents a sizeable investment and their careful maintenance insures that this investment will be available to use for many years to come. Jim Mynard's work in this area will be missed.
- Edie Decker deserves special thanks for serving as "Sunshine Chairman" for the choir. She makes sure that each choir member receives a birthday card and that we send flowers, cards, etc. not just to choir members, but other members of the St. Michael's congregation, too.
- Many thanks to Virginia Henry who handles the petty cash collections for the choir. Virginia also helps with ordering balloons, flowers, etc. for our choir members and other members of the St. Michael's congregational family.
- It is at this point in these annual reports where I repeat myself and I know I sound like a stuck record, CD, tape, whatever; however, I am continually amazed at the members of the St. Michael's Chancel Choir. I came to St. Michael's in August 1987 intending to stay a maximum of two weeks; but because of the wonderful people who have been part of the choir during the past 20-plus-years period, I have stayed and I firmly believe this was God's plan for my own life- this is where He wanted me to be. Therefore, He gave me the resources to make it possible for me to work here by placing in my hands this incredibly dedicated, hard-working, loving, and supportive group of people! They give many hours to the ongoing task of providing beautiful music to enhance the worship service week after week after week here at St. Michael's. Music is said to be 90% hard work and 10% talent, and I have never known this group to shirk the 90% hard work, which, in turn, develops the talent. I am deeply grateful to each and every member of the St. Michael's Chancel Choir for these marvelous gifts of time, talent, energy, and commitment. Because of them, all of our hearts and minds are lifted a little closer to heaven.
- If you have ever thought about joining the choir, there is no time like the present. We really need singers. The choir, like the church itself, is a dynamic process of continual change. Some members, like our beloved Wayne Parsell, Jack McPhillips, and Warner Seargeant, have been part of the choir since its formation and others like our two Paulas, Frink and Campanella, are recent additions to our singing family; but the point is, the choir is open to everyone. The only requirements are that you are able to match pitches and that you bring a willing heart, an open mind, a willingness to work hard, and a commitment to give of your best. Please join us in this glorious art form of making music and in being part of the warm and loving "family" which is the St. Michael's Chancel Choir.
