River City Community Services

2007 Annual Report

Dear Friends,

Thank you for your continued support of River City Community Services.  At RCCS, St. Michael’s is recognized as one of our most supportive parishes.  Not only do you support our fund raisers and make regular contributions of food and funds, but you are one of the very few parishes who reach out to the hungry during the holidays by providing bountiful baskets of food for families in need.  Individuals in this parish also serve as regular weekly volunteers at RCCS.  Others provide special gifts like clothes, blankets, hats, and booties for children and babies.  You are a very special parish and we are very touched by your generosity and support.

The fourth quarter of 2007 began a challenging trend for RCCS.  We are experiencing a 20% increase in the number of families needing food while our costs for providing nutritious food have increased by approximately 35%.

* Clients served in 2007:  29,122:  (over 32% were children)
* Separate households served:  13,053
* Nights of emergency shelter provided:  559nights:  68 families:
* Rental Assistance provided:  25 families
* Food donations received:  312,311 pounds

With your help, we provide nutritional sustenance, emergency shelter, and compassionate service to low income families.  May we continue to work the Gospel message in our outreach to others by giving and serving together.

Empty Bowls - A River City Community Services Charity

The fifth Empty Bowls luncheon event – to be held Tuesday, March 11th, 2008, 11 a.m. – 2 p.m., at the Masonic Temple, 1123 J Street – will help raise funds at a critical time for increasing numbers of hungry adults and children in the Sacramento area.  During the last three months of 2007, requests for food assistance received by River City Community Services increased 40 percent over the prior year while the agency’s food expenses increased 35 percent during the same period.  The event provides a vital source of funds for River City Community Services, a 501(c)(3) charity that provides food and emergency housing aid to anyone in need in Sacramento County.

Tickets may be purchased for $25 each through the agency’s website at http://www.rivercitycommunityservices.org, or at the following Sacramento retail locations:

  • Tulip Paperie, 2600 Fair Oaks Boulevard, Suite 109, 481-4159
  • Prudential California Realty, 1819 K Street, Suite 100, 491-1516
  • Trinity Cathedral Bookshop, 2620 Capitol Avenue, 446-2513
  • Avid Reader at the Tower, 1600 Broadway, 441-4400

The $25 donation includes a soup luncheon prepared by area restaurants, and handmade bowl made by students and artists from throughout the region.

Cash donations may be made online at www.rivercitycommunityservices.org, or sent by mail to P. O. Box 160204, Sacramento, CA 95816.

For further information, contact Eileen Thomas via telephone at 916-446-2627, x3001, or via email at rccsca@sbcglobal.net.
