History of Our Church

In March of 1955, the first service of Carmichael Episcopal Church was held in the Sierra View Funeral Chapel.  Twenty Sacramento families felt the need to establish a church in the growing suburban community of Carmichael.

In 1956, the members were granted admission as a Diocesan Mission to be known as St. Michael’s, and The Rev. J. Thurlow Baker accepted the call as full time priest.  In 1960, St. Michael’s attained Parish status and he was elected Rector.

On property previously purchased, a multi-purpose Parish Hall was built.  First services were held on Palm Sunday, 1959.  Rooms across the courtyard provided staff office space and Sunday school classrooms.

Increasing need for larger space resulted in the new church building, completed in May 1963.  Further building expansion met the needs of the Parish and St. Michael’s Day School, which opened in 1962 with pre-school and kindergarten and now extends through 8th grade.  In 1999, new classrooms were built, and in 2000, a gymnasium was added to the campus.
